  • Happy Holidays! Toy Safety Tips from Affinity
  • December 1, 2018

December is here, and the holidays are upon us! As your children are making their lists for Santa, keep in mind the toys that are safest for your little ones. December is Safe Toys and Gifts month, and we at Affinity have gathered some guidelines for you to follow to be sure that your little elves are not only thrilled with their gifts, but that they are safe as well.

When shopping for toys for the children in your life, always remember the following tips:

    Before you purchase a toy:

• Read all warning and instructions on the packaging

• Ask yourself if the toy is appropriate for the child’s ability and age

    • Avoid purchasing toys with sharp or rigid points, spikes, rods or dangerous edges – especially for young children

    • Buy toys that will withstand impact and not break into dangerous shards

• Look for the letters “ASTM” – this means the product meets the national safety standards set by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)

    • Avoid toys that short or include parts that fly off – remember that BB guns are NOT toys

Before letting children play with toys:

    • Inspect toys for safe, sturdy construction

    • Explain how to use the toy

• Fix or throw away broken toys

    Always:

    • Keep young children away from toys meant for older children

    • Supervise your children while playing

• Supervise children’s craft projects (scissors and glue can become dangerous when misused)

• Have children wear helmets when riding bikes, scooters and skateboards
